Ed Smith was a true pioneer in the field of industrial design. As one of the first African Americans to work in the industry, he faced numerous challenges and prejudices throughout his career. But despite these obstacles, he persevered and made a significant impact on the world of design.

Smith was born in 1928 in Chicago, Illinois. He developed a passion for art and design at a young age. He attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he studied industrial design. After graduating, he worked as a freelance designer for several years before landing a job at General Motors in 1954.

At General Motors, Smith worked on a variety of projects, including the design of car interiors, appliances, and furniture. He was known for his innovative and user-friendly designs. He also played a key role in the development of the Pontiac GTO, one of the first muscle cars.

Despite his success at General Motors, Smith faced discrimination throughout his career. He was often passed over for promotions and given less desirable assignments than his white colleagues. But he never let these setbacks discourage him. He continued to work hard and produce innovative designs.

In 1968, Smith left General Motors to start his own design firm. He quickly became known for his work in the field of medical design. He designed a variety of products for people with disabilities, including wheelchairs, prosthetic limbs, and other medical devices.

Smith was a passionate advocate for diversity in the field of design. He founded the National Organization of Minority Architects (NOMA) and served as its president for several years. He also worked with the American Institute of Architects (AIA) to promote diversity and inclusion in the profession.

Ed Smith's story is an inspiration to us all. He overcame adversity to achieve great things. He was a pioneer in the field of industrial design and a tireless advocate for diversity and inclusion. His legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.
