Ministry and Theological Education

After graduating from Williams College, Boardman felt a strong calling to the ministry. He enrolled at Andover Theological Seminary, where he studied under some of the most renowned theologians of his time. In 1825, he was ordained as a Baptist minister and began his pastoral work in the town of Washington, D.C.

Throughout his ministry, Boardman was known for his powerful sermons, his compassionate pastoral care, and his unwavering commitment to social justice. He was an outspoken advocate for the abolition of slavery and a passionate supporter of education for all. He believed that the church had a vital role to play in addressing the social and economic challenges of his time.

Educational Leadership

In addition to his ministry, Boardman was a dedicated educator. In 1832, he became the president of the newly founded Burman Theological Seminary (now Burma Divinity School) in Rangoon, Burma. Under his leadership, the seminary became a leading center of theological education in Southeast Asia. Boardman also founded several other schools and colleges, including Judson College in Rangoon and Boardman College in Rangoon.

Service to Community

Boardman's service extended far beyond the walls of the church and the classroom. He was a tireless advocate for the poor and marginalized. He established orphanages, hospitals, and other social welfare institutions to meet the needs of the most vulnerable members of society. He also played a leading role in the establishment of the American Baptist Foreign Mission Society and served as its corresponding secretary for many years.

Later Life and Legacy

In his later years, Boardman continued to be an active voice for justice and compassion. He spoke out against the evils of slavery and the oppression of the poor. He also wrote several books and articles on theology, education, and social reform. George Dana Boardman passed away in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on February 11, 1879, at the age of 78.
