Electrical shock is a serious matter. Even a small amount of electricity can cause injury or death. In the United States, an average of 300 people die each year from electrical shock.
Electrical shock can occur in a variety of ways. The most common causes include:
- Contact with a live wire
- Contact with a faulty appliance
- Contact with a lightning strike
The effects of electrical shock vary depending on the amount of electricity involved and the length of time the person is exposed to it. Mild electrical shock can cause tingling, numbness, and muscle spasms. Severe electrical shock can cause burns, cardiac arrest, and death.
If you or someone you know is experiencing an electrical shock, call 911 immediately. While waiting for help to arrive, follow these steps:
- Turn off the power to the source of the shock.
- If possible, use a non-conductive object to move the person away from the source of the shock.
- Begin CPR if the person is not breathing or has no pulse.
Electrical shock is a preventable injury. By following these safety tips, you can help keep yourself and others safe:
- Never touch a live wire.
- Always inspect electrical cords and appliances for damage before using them.
- Do not use electrical appliances in wet areas.
- Keep children away from electrical cords and appliances.
