In her book *Memorial Mania: Public Feeling in America*, historian Ann Fabian explores the complex emotions and motivations that have led to the creation of these memorials. She argues that memorials are not simply passive objects, but active participants in our public life. They can be used to celebrate heroes, mourn the dead, and promote social change.
Fabian's book is a fascinating look at the history of public memorials in America. She traces the evolution of these structures from the early days of the republic to the present day. Along the way, she examines the different ways that memorials have been used to commemorate both triumph and tragedy.
One of the most interesting chapters in the book is Fabian's discussion of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. This memorial, which was dedicated in 1982, is one of the most controversial and moving memorials in the country. Fabian explores the complex emotions that went into the creation of the memorial, and how it has been used to both commemorate the dead and heal the wounds of the Vietnam War.
Fabian's book is a valuable contribution to the literature on public memorials. It is a well-written and thought-provoking work that will appeal to anyone interested in American history, culture, or politics.
